Edge Rewards comparison

Strava Challenges vs Edge Rewards: Badges or Real Rewards?

Strava challenges give you a goal and a digital badge, Edge Rewards will turn every logged workout into points for real products, and because the two apps sync, you can enjoy both.

TL;DR

  • You do not have to choose: Edge syncs with Strava, so a run you log on Strava can count towards Edge points.
  • Strava challenges set a goal (distance, time or active days) inside a date window, and finishing usually earns a digital badge for your Trophy Case.
  • Some brand-sponsored Strava challenges add a perk, typically a discount code or a prize draw entry, and eligibility can depend on where you live.
  • Edge Rewards, launching in November 2026, will give points for any logged workout and your daily steps, to spend on real products like coffee, gels, snacks, protein and gear.
  • Edge Rewards is free for everyone. Edge Pro members earn faster, with no daily cap.

If you run on Strava, you have probably joined a challenge or two. Hit a distance in a month, log a set number of active days, and a shiny badge lands in your Trophy Case. It feels good, and it keeps plenty of people moving. Edge Rewards, launching in November 2026, takes a different approach: every logged workout and your daily steps earn points you can swap for real products. So which is better, badges or real rewards? The honest answer is that they do different jobs, and because Edge syncs with Strava, you can have both.

What are Strava challenges?

Strava challenges are time-limited goals you join in the Strava app or on the website. According to Strava's own help pages, a challenge might ask you to hit a distance, elevation or time target, match a segment, or be active on a certain number of days. They can last a single day, a week or a whole month.

They come in a few flavours:

  • Strava's own challenges. Regular goals set by Strava, such as monthly distance or activity targets. The line-up changes from time to time, so the exact challenges on offer vary through the year.
  • Sponsored challenges. Run by brands, often in sportswear, nutrition or tech. Alongside the badge, some offer finishers a perk, usually a discount code or entry into a prize draw, and occasionally a free product. Strava notes that eligibility for prizes can depend on your region.
  • Group Challenges. Private challenges you set up with friends or your club. At the time of writing, Strava says you need a subscription or a free trial to create or join one.

Finish a challenge and you get a digital finisher badge in your Trophy Case, a page on your profile that collects every challenge you have completed. Your most recent badges show on your profile for friends to see.

What are Strava challenges good at?

Quite a lot, to be fair. There is a reason so many runners and riders have a Trophy Case full of badges.

  • They are free to join. Public challenges can be joined with a free Strava account at the time of writing. Only Group Challenges sit behind the subscription.
  • A clear target with a deadline. A number and an end date is a simple, proven way to stay consistent when motivation dips.
  • Community. When you join or finish a challenge, your followers can see it in their feed. Friends pile in, and suddenly you are all chasing the same goal.
  • Variety. There is nearly always something new to aim for, from a short streak to a big monthly total.
  • A record of your year. Scrolling back through your Trophy Case is a nice reminder of how far you have come.

For lots of people, that little badge is exactly the nudge they need to get out of the door on a cold, dark Tuesday.

What does a badge actually give you?

This is where the two ideas split. A badge is recognition. It is proof that you did the thing, and that has real value for motivation. What it is not is something you can use. For most of Strava's own challenges, the badge is the reward, and that is the whole point.

Sponsored challenges can add something tangible, but it usually takes the form of a discount off a future purchase or a chance in a prize draw, rather than a guaranteed item. That is a fair deal for a free challenge, and some of the discounts are generous, but you still need to buy something to make use of most of them.

Challenges also ask you to hit one specific goal in a set window. If a challenge is distance-based and your week is mostly strength sessions or HIIT, those workouts may not move you closer to the badge. That is not a flaw, it is simply what a challenge is designed to do: focus you on one target.

What is Edge Rewards?

Edge Rewards is a free rewards programme from Edge, launching in November 2026. It is not live yet, so everything below describes what it will do at launch. The idea behind it is simple: get rewarded for moving.

Instead of a one-off goal, you earn points every day for the training you already do. Those points are spent in an in-app marketplace of real products from partner brands, a mix of free items and discounts. Think categories like coffee and drinks, gels, snacks and bars, protein and supplements, and apparel and gear. The rewards are gifted by partner brands, and everyone can earn and redeem, whether you use Edge for free or on Edge Pro.

How do you earn Edge points?

  • Workouts: 1 point per minute of any logged workout, up to 50 points a day.
  • Steps: 2.5 points per 1,000 steps, up to 25 points a day.
  • Daily cap: a combined maximum of 50 points a day, with no roll-over.
  • Monthly reset: points reset to zero at the end of each calendar month, so the system rewards steady, regular movement rather than stockpiling.
  • Any workout counts: a run, a strength session, a HIIT class or a mobility flow, including manual entries and imports from Strava, Apple Health, Garmin and Coros.

Edge Pro members earn faster with Double XP, have no daily cap, and get exclusive prizes and secret offers. As a rough illustration, about a week of training earns a free coffee.

The big difference from a challenge is that there is no single target to hit. A short HIIT session on a busy Wednesday counts. So does a long Sunday run, and so do the steps from your commute.

Do you have to choose between Strava and Edge Rewards?

No, and this is the part most people miss. Edge syncs with Strava. Connect the two once, keep logging your runs on Strava as normal, and each imported workout counts towards your Edge points, just like a session logged directly in Edge. That same run still counts towards whichever Strava challenge you have joined.

In practice, one run can do two jobs: move you closer to a Strava badge and earn points towards something real in the Edge marketplace. Keep your Strava streak, your clubs and your kudos. Edge simply adds rewards on top. The same goes if you record on a Garmin or Coros watch or through Apple Health, since those sync with Edge too.

Which one suits you?

  • Strava challenges on their own suit you if you love goal-chasing, collecting badges and the social buzz of your feed, and you are not bothered about tangible rewards.
  • Edge Rewards suits you if you want your regular training, including strength and HIIT, to earn points towards things you actually use, like a coffee after a long run or gels for race day.
  • Both is the easy answer if you already log on Strava. It costs nothing to earn Edge points, and your Strava habits stay exactly as they are.

If you want a plan to go with the points, Edge Pro gives you a fully personalised plan across running, strength, HIIT and mobility, ready in 15 minutes, with a real coach you can message anytime. It is £19.99 a month with a free 7-day trial, and it is already used by 20,000+ members. You never need it to earn rewards, though.

How do you get early access to Edge Rewards?

Edge Rewards opens to founding members on the waitlist from Sunday 1 November 2026, with the public launch on Saturday 7 November 2026.
