EDGE REWARDS

What Are Your Workout Points Actually Worth?

An honest look at what fitness reward points really get you, and how Edge Rewards pays out in real products for any training.

TL;DR

  • Most step-reward apps pay in an abstract currency worth very little, usually gift cards or small discounts.
  • Edge Rewards, free and launching October 2026, pays in real products from partner brands, a mix of free items and discounts.
  • You earn up to 50 points a day from any logged workout, not just steps, and points reset each month.
  • Roughly a week of training is about enough for a free coffee. A nice bonus, not a payday.
  • Edge Pro members earn faster with Double XP, no daily cap, and exclusive prizes.

Reward points for exercise sound brilliant. Move your body, earn something back, spend it on things you actually want. The reality is often less exciting. Most step-tracking apps pay in an abstract currency that quietly turns out to be worth very little. Before you sign up to anything, it helps to know what a point is really worth, and what to look for in a scheme that respects your effort.

What do fitness reward points actually get you?

The honest answer for most apps is: not much, and rarely in cash. Almost every scheme that promises to pay you for walking or working out actually pays you in an in-app currency or a points balance. You then spend that balance in a marketplace on gift cards, small discount codes, prize draws, or the occasional physical item. Independent reviews of the best-known step-reward apps tend to reach the same conclusion. The value is real but modest, and the genuinely good offers tend to sell out fast.

Some apps go a step further and pay in a crypto-style token. That can sound futuristic, but those tokens are often worth a tiny fraction of a penny each, so a keen walker might build up the equivalent of a coffee or two across a whole year. None of this is a scandal. These apps are free, and a little nudge to move more is still worthwhile. It only becomes a problem when the marketing hints at riches and the wallet says otherwise.

Why are most step-coin rewards worth so little?

It comes down to who pays. A rewards scheme has to be funded by someone, usually advertisers or brands paying to put an offer in front of you. That is fine, but it means the currency is only ever worth what a brand is willing to give away, which is usually a small discount rather than a free product. Wrapping that in a points balance or a token can make the value feel bigger than it really is.

There are other catches to watch for. Daily earning caps limit how fast you can build a balance. Popular rewards are often stocked in tiny numbers, so they vanish within minutes of dropping. And some schemes let points expire, so a balance you were saving quietly resets before you get to spend it. Add these together and the effective value of a single point can be far lower than the headline suggests.

How is Edge Rewards different?

Edge Rewards, our free programme launching in October 2026, is built to avoid those traps. The core idea is simple. You earn points for training, and you spend them in an in-app marketplace on real products from partner brands, rather than on an abstract currency you have to decode. It is a mix of genuinely free items and discounts, across categories most members actually use, like coffee and drinks, gels, snacks and bars, protein and supplements, and apparel and gear. We are keeping the partner brands under wraps until launch, but the categories give you a fair sense of what is coming.

Two things matter here. First, every reward is a real product, so a point maps to something you can hold, drink or wear, rather than a number that may or may not buy anything. Second, you earn from any training, not just steps. A strength session, a HIIT class, a run, a mobility flow, a manual entry, or an activity imported from Strava, Apple Health, Garmin or Coros all count. You are rewarded for the training you already do.

How do you earn Edge points, and how does the maths work?

The maths is deliberately easy to follow. You can earn up to 50 points on any given day, from two sources:

  • 1 point for every minute of any logged workout, up to 50 points.
  • 2.5 points for every 1,000 steps, up to 25 points.
  • The two combine to a daily cap of 50 points, with no roll-over to the next day.
  • Points reset to zero at the end of each calendar month, so it pays to spend them.

In practice that means a solid week of training, hitting the daily points on most days, is roughly enough for a free coffee from the marketplace. It will not replace your income, and we would never pretend otherwise. What it does is give you a small, real reward for showing up, on top of the training itself.

What can you actually get for your points?

Set your expectations sensibly and Edge Rewards is a pleasant bonus rather than a payday. As a rough guide, about a week of training is enough for a free coffee. Bigger or premium items cost more points, and some rewards are discounts rather than freebies, so a chunk of points knocks money off something you were going to buy anyway. Because rewards are gifted by partner brands, the range will change over time, which keeps the marketplace fresh.

The categories at launch cover the everyday kit of anyone who trains: coffee and drinks to fuel a morning session, gels, snacks and bars for longer efforts, protein and supplements for recovery, and apparel and gear for the sessions themselves. These are examples of the sorts of things you will find, not a fixed list, and we will not be naming individual brands before launch.

Do you have to pay to earn rewards?

No. Edge Rewards is free, and every member earns and redeems points. You do not need a subscription to take part. If you do train on Edge Pro, our premium plan, you earn faster: Pro members get Double XP, have no daily earning cap so they can keep earning past the usual limit, and unlock exclusive prizes and secret offers that free members do not see. The free programme is genuinely useful on its own, and Pro simply speeds things up for members who want more.

How can you tell if a rewards scheme is any good?

If you are weighing up any fitness rewards app, a few quick questions cut through the marketing:

  • What do points actually buy? Real products beat an abstract balance or a token you have to convert.
  • Free items or only discounts? A good scheme offers a mix, so you are not always topping up with your own money.
  • What counts as earning? Rewarding all training is fairer than steps alone, especially if you lift or do HIIT.
  • Do points expire, and how hard is the cap? Short expiry and low caps quietly shrink what your effort is worth.
  • Who funds it, and is that clear? Partner-gifted rewards with named categories are easier to trust than vague promises.

Run Edge Rewards through the same checklist and it holds up: real products, a mix of free and discounted, points from any training, a clear monthly reset, and a marketplace stocked by partner brands. Edge Rewards goes live in October 2026, so if you like the idea of real products for the training you already do, the best move is to join the waitlist now and be first in when it launches.
