Valencia Marathon 2026: your complete runner's guide

Everything UK runners need to plan, enter, pace and enjoy the fast, flat Valencia Marathon on Sunday 6 December 2026.

TL;DR

  • Valencia is one of the world's fastest, flattest marathons, a genuine PB course that finishes on a bridge over the water by the City of Arts and Sciences.
  • The 2026 race is on Sunday 6 December. Most places now come through a public ballot, with guaranteed entries via official tour operators and charities.
  • Expect around 30,000 runners, an organised start with waves by predicted finish time, and mild December weather that suits fast running.
  • On a flat course, even or slightly negative splits win the day, so stay patient early and finish strong.
  • Build durability with hybrid training. Pairing running with strength, HIIT and mobility helps your legs hold form over 42.195km.

Race day, a Sunday in early December

Few marathons carry a reputation quite like Valencia. Over the past decade the race on Spain's east coast has grown from a solid regional event into one of the most sought after big city marathons in the world, and the place where a remarkable number of runners set a personal best. If a fast, flat, well organised race in mild winter sunshine sounds like your idea of a good day out, this guide walks you through the course, entry, logistics, weather, pacing, fuelling and travel, plus a training angle to help your legs last the distance.

Why is Valencia known as the fastest marathon course?

Valencia's reputation rests on three things: the profile, the weather and the organisation. The course is famously flat, looping through the city with barely any meaningful climb, so you can hold a steady effort from start to finish without hills breaking your rhythm. Early December on the Mediterranean tends to be cool and calm, which is close to ideal for distance running. And the event is run with real precision, from the pace groups to the road surface, all of which helps fast times.

The record book tells the story. The men's course record stands at 2:01:48, set here in 2023, among the quickest marathons ever recorded, while the women's course record of 2:14:00 was set in 2025. You do not need to be anywhere near that level to benefit. The same conditions that let the elite fly also help club runners and first timers chase a realistic target with confidence.

When is the 2026 race and how do you get a place?

The 2026 Valencia Marathon takes place on Sunday 6 December, following the event's tradition of an early December date. Getting a place has changed in recent years. Demand now far outstrips the number of bibs, so the race uses a public ballot alongside a loyalty window that lets previous runners renew their place first. Because timing and exact rules shift from year to year, check the official race channels for the current ballot dates and confirm your entry before you book anything.

If you miss the ballot or want a guaranteed spot, official tour operators and charity partners offer places, usually bundled with accommodation or a fundraising commitment. These typically cost more than a standard entry, so weigh up the convenience against the price. However you enter, secure your travel only once your place is confirmed.

What is the course actually like?

The route starts near the Pont de Montolivet and heads out into the city in a broad loop that keeps the flat profile all the way round. You pass wide boulevards and the green ribbon of the old Turia riverbed gardens, before the finish delivers the moment everyone remembers. The closing stretch runs into the City of Arts and Sciences, where the line sits on a bridge over the water beside the striking white museum buildings. It is one of the most photogenic finishes in the sport.

Because the course is so flat, there is nowhere to hide and nowhere that forces a change of gear. That is a gift for even pacing, but it also means you carry your own rhythm the whole way. Practise running at goal effort on flat ground in training so race day feels familiar under your feet.

What are the start logistics, waves and bib collection?

Valencia runs a start organised into waves and pens based on your predicted finish time, which keeps the early kilometres from becoming a crush. Aim to arrive with plenty of time for bag drop and the inevitable toilet queues, then find your allocated pen before it closes. The bag drop and start areas sit close to the finish zone around the City of Arts and Sciences, which makes the logistics refreshingly simple.

There is no race day bib posting. You collect your bib in person at the marathon expo in the days before the race, so bring photo identification and your confirmation. The expo is worth a visit in its own right for kit, pacing advice and the pre race atmosphere, but try not to spend hours on your feet the day before you run.

Keep an eye on the cut-off. Valencia tightened its time limit to around 5 hours 30 minutes at the time of writing, with intermediate checkpoints along the route, so factor that into your plan if you expect to be out on the course for longer.

What is the weather usually like in December?

This is a big part of Valencia's appeal. Early December on the Spanish coast is typically mild, often somewhere around 8 to 16C, with a good chance of dry, still conditions. That is cool enough to race hard without overheating, and warm enough that you are comfortable on the start line in a vest and shorts once you get moving. Pack a cheap throwaway layer for the wait before the gun, and check the forecast in the final few days so you can fine tune what you wear.

How should you pace a flat course like Valencia?

On a pancake flat course, the winning strategy is patience. The most common mistake is banking time early while the legs feel fresh, then paying heavily over the final 10km. Aim instead for even splits, or a slightly negative split where your second half is a touch quicker than your first. Reach halfway feeling like you are holding back, then let the effort build over the closing miles.

The table below shows even pace targets for a range of finish times. For a negative split, aim to pass halfway a minute or so slower than the even split shown, then gradually pick it up.

Target finishAverage pace per kmAverage pace per mileEven halfway split
3:00:004:166:521:30:00
3:30:004:598:011:45:00

4:30:006:2410:182:15:00
5:00:007:0711:272:30:00

Paces are rounded and assume even effort across the full 42.195km. Accurate at the time of writing.

How should you fuel for a fast marathon?

Fuelling can make or break a strong pace. In the days before the race, top up your carbohydrate stores with familiar, easy to digest meals, and arrive well hydrated rather than drinking litres at the last minute. On race morning, eat a light breakfast you have tested in training, ideally around three hours before the start.

During the race, take on carbohydrate regularly rather than waiting until you feel empty. Many runners aim for a gel or equivalent every 30 to 45 minutes, washed down with water from the on course stations. The golden rule is nothing new on race day. Whatever gels, chews or drinks you plan to use, practise with them on your long runs so your stomach knows what is coming. Valencia's drink stations are frequent and well stocked, so learn roughly where they fall and time your fuelling around them.

What should UK runners know about travel and timing?

Valencia is an easy trip from the UK, with direct flights from several airports and a compact, walkable city centre. Book flights and accommodation as early as your place allows, because prices climb as the race weekend approaches and the best located hotels fill quickly. Staying within walking distance of the City of Arts and Sciences makes race morning far less stressful.

Give yourself time to settle. Arriving on the Friday or Saturday lets you collect your bib without rushing, find your feet and eat well. Here is a simple race week timeline to keep the logistics calm.

WhenWhat to do
6+ weeks outConfirm your place, then book flights and accommodation near the finish.
2 to 3 weeks outEase into your taper, plan your kit and start watching the forecast.
Thursday or FridayTravel to Valencia and settle in without cramming your schedule.
SaturdayCollect your bib at the expo with photo ID, do a short shake out jog, then rest off your feet.
Sunday morningLight tested breakfast about three hours before, arrive early for bag drop and toilets, find your wave.
After the finishRefuel, collect your kit bag, keep moving gently, then enjoy the city.

Why does hybrid strength and running help marathon durability?

Marathon training is not only about running more. The runners who arrive on the start line durable, and who hold form in the final 10km when others fade, tend to be the ones who have built strength alongside their mileage. Strength work supports the tendons and muscles that absorb thousands of foot strikes, mobility keeps your stride free, and short bursts of HIIT can sharpen your engine without piling on junk miles. Treated as one joined up plan rather than separate hobbies, running, strength, HIIT and mobility make you a more robust runner.

This is exactly how Edge is built. Edge treats running, strength and HIIT as one hybrid plan rather than isolated silos, which is its key difference from single discipline apps. It is a free fitness app used by 18,000+ members, and Edge Pro adds a fully personalised programme across running, strength, HIIT and mobility, ready in 15 minutes, with a real coach you can message anytime. It syncs with Strava, Garmin, Apple Health and Coros, so your whole marathon build sits in one place. Edge Pro is £19.99 a month with a free 7-day trial if you want to test it before a big block.
