Walking rewards, ranked

Top 3 Reward Apps for Walkers in the UK

If you mostly walk, these are the three reward apps worth your time, ranked on what a walk earns, what you get back and what you can use today.

TL;DR

  • Our ranking for walkers: 1. Edge Rewards, 2. WeWard, 3. Sweatcoin. Edge Rewards is our own programme, so our criteria are set out below.
  • Edge Rewards counts your steps and any walk you record, and points go on real products. It is not live yet: early access from 1 November, public launch 7 November 2026.
  • WeWard is the best walking reward app you can use in the UK today, with flexible ways to redeem, though the amounts are small.
  • Sweatcoin is the easiest to set and forget, but outdoor steps count best and its coins are worth little.
  • Treat any walking reward as a nudge to move, not an income.

Edge Rewards public launch. It is not live yet

If walking is your main exercise, you are spoilt for choice. Plenty of UK apps will reward your steps, and most of them sound much the same. This is a short, decisive ranking for people who mostly walk, with a clear pick for each kind of walker.

One thing up front. Edge Rewards is our own programme, and it sits at number one. It is also not live yet. So we have set out how we ranked, shown the catches for every app including ours, and checked the other two in early October 2026. Details can change.

How did we rank them?

Five questions, in this order of importance.

  • Does every walk count? Steps should count wherever you walk, and a proper walk should ideally count as a session too.
  • What do you actually get? Real products and useful rewards rank above coins worth fractions of a penny.
  • How much admin is there? Fewer deadlines and conditions rank higher.
  • Is it free? All three are free to use, with optional subscriptions on top.
  • Can you use it in the UK today? This is where our own programme loses marks.

How do the top three compare?

Why is Edge Rewards number one?

The honest part first. Edge Rewards is not live. It opens to everyone on Saturday 7 November 2026, and waitlist founding members get in from Sunday 1 November. This ranking is based on how it is set to work, not on months of real use. If you want something today, skip to number two.

For walkers, it rewards a walk in two ways. Your steps earn 2.5 points per 1,000, up to 25 a day, so a 10,000-step day banks half the daily total. And any walk you record as a workout earns 1 point a minute, up to a combined cap of 50 points a day. Walk your usual 10,000 steps, record a 25-minute brisk walk as a workout, and you reach the full 50.

Any logged workout counts, including manual entries and walks imported from Strava, Apple Health, Garmin and Coros, so you can keep recording the way you already do. A minute of walking earns the same as a minute of running or a HIIT class, so if you add other training later, it all counts towards the same total.

Points will be spent in an in-app marketplace on real products from partner brands, a mix of free items and discounts across categories like coffee and drinks, snacks and bars, protein and supplements, and apparel and gear. As a rough guide, about a week of training earns a free coffee. If you earn on steps alone, expect it to take longer, because steps can only reach half the daily cap.

Everyone earns and redeems for free. Edge Pro, from £19.99 a month with a free 7-day trial, earns faster with Double XP, has no daily cap, and unlocks exclusive prizes and secret offers. The catches: it is not live yet, and points reset to zero at the end of each calendar month with no roll-over, so they are for spending, not saving.

Why is WeWard second?

WeWard is the best walking reward app you can use in the UK right now, and it is built squarely for walkers. It is free, it reads the steps your phone already counts, and you collect Wards as you pass step levels through the day. Reviews put the daily limit at around 25 Wards, with steps counted up to about 20,000.

Its strength is choice. You can swap Wards for gift cards, give them to charity, or cash out by PayPal or bank transfer once you reach a minimum balance. There are extra ways to earn too, such as checking in at places on its map and partner offers. For a walker who likes a small, regular win, there is a lot to like.

It is second because the value is small and there is some admin. A Ward has been reported at around half a penny in the UK, so even a full day is worth pennies, and the cash-out minimum can take a while to reach. Reviews also say you need to open the app and convert your steps before midnight, or that day's Wards are lost. There is an optional Premium subscription, but you do not need it.

Why is Sweatcoin third?

Sweatcoin is the name most people know, and it is the easiest to set and forget. It is free and turns your steps into coins, at roughly one for every 1,000 steps it can verify using your phone's motion sensors and location. You spend them in an in-app marketplace on offers, products and gift cards, or donate them.

It is third because of how it counts and what a coin buys. Sweatcoin's own help pages say indoor steps convert at a much lower rate than outdoor ones, so treadmill walking and pottering around the house count for less. The free plan has a daily cap, around 10 coins a day at the time of writing, and an optional Premium subscription raises it. Coins are spent in the app rather than withdrawn, and independent reviews value them at very little. As a background nudge for outdoor walkers, though, it does the job with almost no effort.

Which apps just missed out?

  • Vitality. Steps are the most popular way its members earn activity points, and hitting a weekly target unlocks rewards such as a hot drink. It is very good for walkers, but you need an eligible Vitality insurance plan, so it is a decision about insurance rather than an app.
  • Paace. A London app that turns steps into savings at partner coffee shops, restaurants and studios. Great if you live or work near its partners, less useful elsewhere.
  • BetterPoints. A free app that runs local programmes with councils and transport bodies, rewarding walking, wheeling, cycling and public transport with vouchers, charity donations or prize draws. Whether it suits you depends on a programme running where you live.

Which one should you pick?

  • You want rewards today, with the most choice. WeWard is the one, and a daily reminder to convert your steps will save you losing Wards.
  • You want zero effort, and you mostly walk outdoors. Sweatcoin suits you best.
  • You want your walks, and any other training, to earn real products. Join the Edge Rewards waitlist and start in November.
  • You already have a Vitality plan. Check your steps are syncing, as walking alone can unlock its weekly rewards.

Can you use more than one? Usually, yes. Step apps each read the steps your phone already counts, so running two side by side is common. From November, the same walking day can also earn Edge points. Check each app's terms for any limits.

Whichever you choose, keep the reward in its place. A free coffee is a nice nudge on a grey morning, but the real win is the walking habit itself. Build up gradually, and let the points follow.
