Rewards for runners

Top 3 Reward Apps for Runners in the UK

Most reward apps only count steps. These three count the run itself, ranked by what you earn, what it costs and what is live today.

TL;DR

  • Most reward apps count steps, not runs. This ranking only includes apps where a run counts as a run.
  • Number 1 is Edge Rewards: free, 1 point per minute of any logged run, spent on real products. It is not live yet. Public launch is Saturday 7 November 2026, with early access for waitlist founding members from Sunday 1 November.
  • Number 2 is Vitality: the strongest option live today, as long as you already hold an eligible plan.
  • Number 3 is Strava challenges: free and made for runners, though most rewards are digital badges.
  • We make Edge, so read our number one with that in mind. The criteria are set out below so you can judge for yourself.

2026 public launch of Edge Rewards. It is not live yet

If you run, most reward apps undersell you. They count steps, so a hard 5K earns about the same as a slow walk to the shops and back. This ranking is for people who want the run itself to count.

One thing up front. We make Edge, and Edge Rewards is on this list. It is also not live yet. So we have set out our criteria, shown our working and tried to be fair to the other two. Details for the other apps were checked in early October 2026 and can change.

What makes a reward app good for runners?

We ranked on five simple questions, in this order of importance.

  • Does a run count as a run? The app should reward the session itself, by minutes or as a workout, not only the steps inside it.
  • How often do you earn? Every run is better than only when a set challenge happens to suit you.
  • What do you actually get? Real products rank above digital badges, although badges still have value.
  • What does it cost to take part? Free to join ranks above anything that needs you to buy a separate product.
  • Can you use it in the UK today? This is where our own programme loses marks, and we say so plainly below.

Why is Edge Rewards number one?

First, the honest part. Edge Rewards is not live. It launches to everyone on Saturday 7 November 2026, and waitlist founding members get early access from Sunday 1 November. This ranking is based on how it is set to work, not on months of real use. If being available today matters most to you, skip to number two.

On the first four questions, though, it is built the way runners tend to want. Edge Rewards is a free rewards programme inside the Edge app. Members will earn 1 point for every minute of any logged workout, up to 50 a day, plus 2.5 points per 1,000 steps, up to 25 a day. The combined daily cap is 50 points. So a 30-minute easy run earns 30 points before your steps are added.

Any logged workout counts, including manual entries and runs imported from Strava, Apple Health, Garmin and Coros. You will not need to change how you record your running. There is no set challenge to sign up for, and an easy jog earns at the same rate per minute as a hard interval session.

Your runWorkout points (free tier)Worth knowing
20 minutes20Steps can add more, up to 50 a day
30 minutes30Steps can add more, up to 50 a day
45 minutes45Steps can add more, up to 50 a day
60 minutes or longer50You have reached the daily cap. Edge Pro has no cap

Points will be spent in an in-app marketplace on real products from partner brands. Expect a mix of free items and discounts across categories like coffee and drinks, gels, snacks and bars, protein and supplements, and apparel and gear. As a rough guide, about a week of training earns a free coffee.

Everyone earns and redeems for free. Edge Pro, which starts from £19.99 a month with a free 7-day trial, earns faster with Double XP, has no daily cap, and unlocks exclusive prizes and secret offers.

There are catches worth knowing. Points reset to zero at the end of each calendar month, so they are for spending, not hoarding. On the free tier, a 90-minute long run earns the same 50 points as a 50-minute run. And until launch day, all of this is a plan and not a track record.

Why is Vitality second?

Vitality is the best-established UK programme that rewards real exercise, and it is live right now. If you already have an eligible plan, it is the best option on this list today.

At the time of writing, Vitality activity points come from daily steps, tracked heart-rate workouts and taking part in parkrun. A run recorded on a linked watch or tracker can count as a heart-rate workout. Around 30 minutes with your heart rate raised earns points, and a harder or longer session earns more. Walking, running or volunteering at parkrun earns points too. There is a limit of 8 activity points a day and 40 a week.

Reach the weekly target, which was 12 activity points when we checked, and you can choose a weekly reward such as a hot drink or a discounted cinema ticket. Three tracked runs of 30 minutes or more a week would usually be enough. Depending on your plan, there can be wider perks as well.

The reason it is second and not first is the cost of entry. You need an eligible Vitality insurance plan to take part. That is a decision about insurance, not about running, so it makes most sense as a reward app if you already have a plan through work or your own cover. Targets and rewards vary by plan and change over time, so check your own member area for the current details.

Why are Strava challenges third?

Strava is where a huge number of UK runners already log their miles, which makes its challenges the easiest option here to start today. A challenge sets a goal, such as a distance, a time or a number of active days, inside a date window. Join one, and your matching runs count towards it automatically. Public challenges are free to join.

Finish a challenge and you usually earn a digital badge for your Trophy Case. Some brand-sponsored challenges add a perk, typically a discount code or an entry into a prize draw. Eligibility can depend on where you live, so read the terms of each challenge before you count on a perk in the UK. Strava also has a subscription, around £8.99 a month or £54.99 a year at the time of writing, but you do not need it to join public challenges.

Challenges are very good at one thing: giving you a reason to get out of the door this month. A clear goal, a deadline and a few club mates doing the same thing is powerful, and for plenty of runners that is the whole point. It is third on this list only because the reward is mostly recognition, and the product perks are occasional.

Which apps just missed out?

A few well-known names are not in the top three. None of them are bad. They simply answer a different question.

  • Step-counting apps, such as Sweatcoin and WeWard. These are free, live in the UK and reward your daily step count. A run counts as the steps inside it, not as a workout, and daily limits apply. They are a fine background earner if you walk a lot.
  • BetterPoints. A free app that runs local programmes with councils and transport bodies in parts of the UK. Some programmes reward running alongside walking, cycling and public transport, with points you can swap for vouchers or donate to charity. It missed the list because it depends on where you live.
  • Badge-only running apps. Plenty of run trackers hand out streaks, badges and trophies. They are good for motivation, but there is nothing to redeem, so they sit outside this ranking.

Which one should you pick?

  • You already have an eligible Vitality plan. Use it now. Link your watch, record your runs and collect your weekly reward.
  • You want something free today and you like a goal. Join a Strava running challenge this month.
  • You want every run to earn towards real products, with no challenge to sign up for. Join the Edge Rewards waitlist and start in November.
  • You want all of it. These three stack. Runs imported from Strava will count towards Edge Rewards, so from November one run can tick off a Strava challenge and earn Edge points.

Whichever you choose, keep the reward in its place. A free coffee is a nice nudge on a wet Tuesday, but it should never push you to run through pain or skip a rest day. Build your running up gradually, keep most of it easy, and let the points follow the training.

How do you get early access to Edge Rewards?
