Edge Rewards
Top 3 Reward Apps for Gym-Goers in the UK
Most reward apps count steps, so a heavy leg day barely registers. These three reward the gym session itself, ranked for people who lift.
TL;DR
- Most reward apps count steps, so lifting barely registers. This ranking only includes apps that reward the gym session itself.
- Number 1 is Edge Rewards, our own programme: free, 1 point per minute of any logged workout at any gym, spent on real products. It is not live yet. It launches on Saturday 7 November 2026, with founding-member early access from Sunday 1 November.
- Number 2 is Vitality: the strongest option live today, with points for every partner gym visit, as long as you hold an eligible plan.
- Number 3 is Virgin Active Member Rewards: weekly rewards for turning up, at no extra cost, but only if you are a member of that chain.

2026 public launch of Edge Rewards. It is not live yet
If you lift, most reward apps were not built with you in mind. They count steps, so an hour of squats can earn less than a walk to the shops. This ranking only includes apps that reward the gym session itself.
One thing up front: we make Edge, Edge Rewards is number one here, and it is not live yet. So we have set out our criteria and tried to be fair to the other two, whose details were checked in early October 2026.
What makes a reward app good for people who lift?
We ranked on five questions, in this order.
- Does a gym session count? By visit or by minutes, not only the steps you take between the racks.
- Does it work at your gym? Any gym, including a home gym, beats a single chain.
- What do you get? Real products and perks beat digital badges.
- What does it cost? Free beats needing a separate plan or membership.
- Is it live in the UK today? This is where our own programme loses marks.
How do the top three compare?
| App | Does a gym session count? | Which gyms? | What you get | Cost to take part | Live in the UK today? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Edge Rewards (our own programme) | Yes. 1 point per minute of any logged workout | Any gym, including a home gym | Real partner products, such as coffee, snacks, protein and gear | Free. Edge Pro earns faster | Not yet. Launches 7 November 2026 |
| 2. Vitality | Yes. 5 activity points per partner gym visit when we checked | PureGym, Nuffield Health and Virgin Active for visit points | A weekly reward such as a hot drink or discounted cinema ticket | Needs an eligible Vitality health or life insurance plan | Yes |
| 3. Virgin Active Member Rewards | Yes. One scanned club entry a day | Virgin Active clubs only | A weekly reward such as a drink voucher or tier points | No extra fee, but needs a Virgin Active membership | Yes |

Why is Edge Rewards number one?
First, the honest part. Edge Rewards is not live. It opens to everyone on 7 November 2026, with early access for waitlist founding members from 1 November. This ranking is based on how it is set to work, not on months of real use. If you need something today, skip to number two.
On the other four questions, it is built for people who lift. Members will earn 1 point per minute of any logged workout, up to 50 a day, plus 2.5 points per 1,000 steps, up to 25, with a combined daily cap of 50. It counts minutes, not steps or heart rate, so a slow, heavy strength session earns at the same rate as a sweaty HIIT class.
It also does not mind where you train, from a big chain to a garage gym, because points follow the logged workout, not a scan at the door. Manual entries count, as do sessions imported from Strava, Apple Health, Garmin and Coros.
| Your gym session | Workout points (free tier) |
|---|---|
| 30-minute lunchtime session | 30 |
| 45-minute weights session | 45 |
| 75-minute leg day | 50 (the free daily cap) |
Points will be spent in an in-app marketplace on real partner products, a mix of free items and discounts across categories like coffee, snacks, protein and gear. As a rough guide, about a week of training earns a free coffee. Everyone earns and redeems for free. Edge Pro, from £19.99 a month with a free 7-day trial, earns faster with Double XP, has no daily cap, and unlocks exclusive prizes and secret offers.
The catches. Points reset to zero at the end of each calendar month, so they are for spending, not saving. On the free tier, a 90-minute session earns the same 50 points as a 50-minute one. And until launch day, this is a plan, not a track record.
Why is Vitality second?
Vitality is the best-established UK programme that rewards the gym directly, and it is live now. If you hold an eligible plan, it is the best option here today.
When we checked, each partner gym visit earned 5 activity points, and the partners were PureGym, Nuffield Health and Virgin Active. Heart-rate workouts tracked on a linked device can count at other gyms, but a steady lifting session with plenty of rest may not keep your heart rate up for long enough, so the partner gym visit is likely to be the more reliable route for lifters. Points are capped at 8 a day and 40 a week.
Hit the weekly target, 12 activity points when we checked, and you choose a reward such as a hot drink or a discounted cinema ticket. Three partner gym visits would do it. Depending on your plan, you may also get up to 50% off partner gym membership.
It is second because of the cost of entry: you need an eligible Vitality health or life insurance plan. That is a decision about insurance, not training, so it suits people who already have cover. Targets and rewards vary by plan, so check your member area.
Why is Virgin Active Member Rewards third?
If you train at Virgin Active, you may already have a rewards programme on your phone. It runs through the club app, a visit counts when you scan in, and there is no extra fee.
It works on a weekly goal. Everyone starts at two visits a week, rising to three, then four, as you keep hitting it, and dropping back a step if you miss. Each week you hit it, you pick a reward, which at the time of writing included an in-club drink voucher or tier points. Bigger milestone rewards follow after 12, 26 and 52 weeks in a row.
It is third because it only works at one chain. If you already train there, it is a well-designed nudge to turn up more often, at no extra cost.
Which apps just missed out?
A few well-known names missed the top three. None are bad. They answer a different question.
- Step-counting apps, such as Sweatcoin and WeWard. Free, live in the UK and great if you walk a lot. A gym session counts only as the steps you take during it, so a lifting day earns little.
- Strava challenges. Free to join, and some challenges may count a logged weights session, depending on the activity types they allow. The reward is mostly a digital badge.
- Other gym chain apps. Several offer partner deals and attendance tracking, but the ones we checked did not reward individual visits with points.
Which one should you pick?
- You hold an eligible Vitality plan and train at a partner gym. Use it now and collect your weekly reward.
- You are a Virgin Active member. Scan in every visit and aim for your weekly goal.
- You train anywhere else, including at home. Join the Edge Rewards waitlist and start earning in November.
- You want all of it. These are not either-or. From November, one gym visit can count towards Vitality or your club goal and earn Edge points too.
Whichever you choose, keep the reward in its place. A free coffee is a nice nudge, but it should never push you to train through pain or skip a rest day. Let the points follow the training.
