HYROX vs CrossFit: Which Should You Actually Train For?

One is a fixed race you can rehearse and pace. The other is a constantly varied training method with a high skill ceiling. Here is how to pick, checked against the official HYROX and CrossFit sources in July 2026.

The short answer

  • HYROX and CrossFit both mix strength and conditioning, but they test different things. HYROX is the same fixed race every time, alternating 1 km runs with eight set workout stations, so you can train for a known course and pace it. CrossFit is broader and constantly varied, with Olympic lifting, gymnastics and unpredictable workouts. If you like running and want a repeatable target, HYROX suits you; if you want variety and skill work, CrossFit suits you.
  • HYROX is a race with a start line and a global leaderboard. CrossFit is a training methodology delivered in affiliate gyms, with competition as an optional extra.
  • Running is half of HYROX. In CrossFit, running appears in some workouts but is never the backbone of the sport.
  • CrossFit asks more of your technical skill, because snatches, muscle-ups and handstand work take time to learn. HYROX movements are simpler to pick up, though the sleds and the wall balls are still heavy work.
  • You do not have to choose a gym to choose a goal. Edge builds one fully personalised plan across running, strength, HIIT and mobility, so you can train for either style from a normal gym.

What is the difference between HYROX and CrossFit?

HYROX and CrossFit both mix strength and conditioning, but they test different things.

The cleanest way to hold the difference is this. HYROX is an event. CrossFit is a method that also runs events. HYROX describes itself as fitness racing, hosted indoors in large exhibition halls, with a format that stays consistent across the globe so results feed global rankings. CrossFit describes itself as a global fitness brand with a community and a methodology of constantly varied functional movements performed at relative intensity, delivered through coached classes that are scaled to the individual.

That difference drives everything else. Because HYROX never changes, you can rehearse it, and training becomes a matter of closing specific gaps. Because CrossFit deliberately varies, you prepare by becoming broadly capable across many movements and time domains, then find out on the day what is being asked.

What does a HYROX race involve?

According to hyrox.com, checked in July 2026, a HYROX race means you run 1 km, then complete one functional workout station, repeated eight times. The stations always come in this order: 1000 m SkiErg, 50 m sled push, 50 m sled pull, 80 m burpee broad jump, 1000 m row, 200 m farmers carry, 100 m sandbag lunges and 100 wall balls. That adds up to 8 km of running alongside the eight stations.

Loads change by division rather than by race. HYROX lists four categories: Open, Pro, Doubles and Relay. Open is the standard entry, Pro uses heavier weights, Doubles splits the stations between two people who run together, and Relay divides the race between four. To show the spread, the individual women's Open sled push is listed at 102 kg including the sled and the men's Pro sled push at 202 kg. Check the official HYROX site and current season rulebook for the exact weights in your division, since formats can change between seasons.

The practical consequence of that fixed structure is pacing. Everyone in the field knows what is coming next, so the race becomes a question of how hard you can push the run without arriving at the sled with nothing left.

What does CrossFit involve?

CrossFit is built around a daily workout that changes. On crossfit.com the method is described as constantly varied functional movements performed at relative intensity, with every class coached and every workout scalable. The published Workout of the Day shows the range. In a single week you might see a one rep max clean, a session built on muscle-ups and 400 m runs, and rounds of wall ball shots and squat snatches, each with intermediate and beginner options.

CrossFit training therefore spans three broad areas: weightlifting with a barbell, gymnastics and bodyweight skill, and conditioning such as running, rowing and skipping. The variety is the point. CrossFit states that no two days are exactly the same, and that training different movements, skills and time domains is what builds broad capability.

Competition exists through the CrossFit Open and the Games season, but most people who train at an affiliate never compete. The class itself is the product, and the fair comparison with a HYROX racer is someone who goes to a class four times a week rather than a Games competitor.

Which is better for runners?

If you already run, HYROX is the more natural fit. Half the race is running, in a very specific form: eight repeated 1 km efforts on tired legs, indoors, with turns. A runner arrives with the aerobic engine built and mostly needs to add strength, grip and the ability to keep moving after a sled.

Runners do tend to underestimate the compromised running. A 1 km split you can hit fresh is not the split you will hit after 100 m of sandbag lunges, so practising runs directly after heavy lower body work is one of the most useful additions.

CrossFit still suits runners who want to get stronger and address weaknesses that mileage never touches, such as overhead position, single leg strength and upper body pulling. It will not develop your running the way a running-led plan does, because running is one ingredient among many. Our comparison of HYROX and marathon training covers the endurance side in more detail.

Which is easier to start as a beginner?

Both are more accessible than their reputations suggest. HYROX movements are simpler: pushing a sled, carrying kettlebells and lunging with a sandbag are learned in minutes rather than months, which is why many first timers enter a race within a few months of starting. The Doubles and Relay divisions also let a beginner share the workload.

CrossFit has a steeper technical learning curve, particularly for the barbell and gymnastics elements, but it front-loads the support. Every class is coached and every workout is scaled, so a beginner is guided through the movements. CrossFit is explicit that you do not need to be fit before starting and that workouts are adapted to your current ability.

Neither format is risk free, and neither prevents injury. Both involve heavy loading and technically demanding movements performed while you are tired, which is exactly when technique degrades. Build the loads gradually rather than jumping to maximal weights, get proper coaching on the barbell lifts, the sleds and the lunges, and stop a session that hurts. If you have pain, an existing injury or a health condition, speak to a doctor or a qualified physiotherapist before starting either.

How should you train for each?

For HYROX, three pillars cover most of it. First, running volume, including easy aerobic mileage and 1 km intervals near race pace. Second, compromised running, where you run straight after a station or a heavy lower body set. Third, station specific strength and endurance, with attention to the sled push and pull, grip work for the farmers carry, and high volume wall ball practice, since 100 wall balls at the end is where many finishing times are won or lost.

For CrossFit, the training is usually the classes themselves, supplemented by skill work on your weakest movements and dedicated strength cycles. Since the workouts vary, progress comes from broad competence rather than rehearsing one course. Many people add accessory work for a specific gap, such as pull-up strength or overhead mobility.

If you would rather train for either style from a normal gym, an app can supply the structure. Edge builds one fully personalised plan across running, strength, HIIT and mobility, which maps well onto HYROX style preparation because those elements sit in one programme rather than three. Your plan is ready within a day, it flexes around your life, and you can message a real coach anytime. More than 18,000 members train with Edge, with a free 7-day trial and plans from £19.99 per month. If you like the CrossFit style but do not have an affiliate nearby, our roundup of the best CrossFit alternative apps covers the other options.

There is also a case for doing both at different points in the year. A winter of CrossFit classes builds strength and skill that transfers to the sleds, the lunges and the wall balls, and a spring of HYROX specific running builds an engine that makes conditioning work feel easier.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between HYROX and CrossFit?

HYROX and CrossFit both mix strength and conditioning, but they test different things.

How many stations are in a HYROX race and what order are they in?

There are eight stations, each preceded by a 1 km run. As listed on hyrox.com in July 2026, the order is 1000 m SkiErg, 50 m sled push, 50 m sled pull, 80 m burpee broad jump, 1000 m row, 200 m farmers carry, 100 m sandbag lunges and 100 wall balls. Weights vary by division, so check the official site for your category before entering.

Can CrossFit training prepare you for HYROX?

A good deal of it transfers. CrossFit builds the strength, the conditioning and the tolerance for sustained effort that HYROX rewards, and wall balls, rowing and burpees appear in both. The gap is usually running volume. Most people coming from CrossFit need to add structured 1 km interval work and easy aerobic mileage, plus practice running straight off a station.

Do you need a CrossFit gym or a HYROX gym to train?

Not necessarily. CrossFit classes are delivered through affiliate gyms and crossfit.com lists more than 9,000 worldwide, so the class experience does depend on finding one. HYROX preparation is more flexible. A gym with a SkiErg, a rower and a sled is ideal, but you can cover most of the work in a normal gym with sensible substitutions and somewhere to run.

Which one is harder?

They are hard in different ways, and neither is objectively tougher. HYROX is a long, sustained effort of roughly an hour or more where the difficulty is holding pace as fatigue builds. CrossFit workouts are usually shorter and sharper, with the difficulty sitting in intensity and in movements that demand skill under fatigue. Your background decides which one feels worse.

Race format and station details were checked against hyrox.com and crossfit.com in July 2026. Formats, divisions and weights can change between seasons, so always confirm the current details on the official sites before you enter a race. This article is general information and not medical advice.
