DEKA vs HYROX: Which Fitness Race Should You Do?

With DEKA's first UK Trifecta weekend coming in November, here is how its 10-zone race compares with HYROX, and which one suits you.

TL;DR

  • Pick DEKA for shorter runs and more variety. Pick HYROX for a longer endurance test and a bigger UK calendar.
  • DEKA FIT is 10 zones with a 500m run before each (5km in total). HYROX is 8 stations with a 1km run before each (8km in total).
  • DEKA's first UK Trifecta weekend is on 28 to 29 November 2026 in Farnborough, Hampshire, and its first EMEA Championship is listed for Liverpool in May 2027.
  • New to racing? DEKA MILE (short runs), DEKA STRONG (no running) and HYROX Doubles are the gentlest ways in.
  • The training overlaps a lot. Running, lunges, carries, sled work, rowing and skiing help in both.

DEKA's first UK Trifecta weekend, Farnborough

DEKA, the 10-zone indoor fitness race run by Spartan, is holding the UK's first DEKA Trifecta weekend on 28 to 29 November 2026, with its first EMEA Championship listed for Liverpool in May 2027. If you are choosing between DEKA and HYROX, the short answer is this: DEKA suits you if you want shorter runs, more variety and gentler entry formats, while HYROX suits you if you want a longer endurance test and a bigger UK race calendar.

Both races mix running with functional fitness stations, both happen indoors, and both are open to everyday exercisers, not just elite racers. But the details change how each one feels on the day, and how you should train for it. Here is a plain-English breakdown, checked against each organiser's own information at the time of writing.

What is happening with DEKA in the UK?

DEKA has been growing its UK calendar through 2026. It held a Manchester weekend in July, which was reported as the UK debut of DEKA FIT Ultra, a five-lap version of the full course.

Next up is the London West DEKA Trifecta Weekend on 28 to 29 November 2026. Despite the name, it is at the Farnborough International Exhibition and Conference Centre in Hampshire, not in London itself. DEKA describes it as the UK's first Trifecta weekend, with DEKA FIT and DEKA Ultra on the Saturday and DEKA MILE and DEKA STRONG on the Sunday.

Looking further ahead, the first DEKA EMEA Championship is listed for 28 to 30 May 2027 on Liverpool's waterfront, and a DEKA FIT East Midlands event in Derby is listed for September 2027. Dates and venues can change, so check DEKA's own event pages before you book travel.

How does a DEKA race work?

DEKA calls itself the decathlon of functional fitness. Every DEKA race uses the same 10 zones in the same order, with set reps, distances and loads for your category. Your total time is called your DEKA Mark, and because the course is standardised, you can compare it from one event to the next. The 10 zones are:

  • Zone 1: alternating reverse lunges holding a RAM (a roller-shaped weight)
  • Zone 2: 500m row
  • Zone 3: box jumps or step-overs, so you do not have to jump
  • Zone 4: med ball sit-up throws
  • Zone 5: 500m ski erg
  • Zone 6: 100m farmer's carry with two dumbbells
  • Zone 7: 25 calories on an air bike
  • Zone 8: dead ball wall-overs
  • Zone 9: sled push and pull
  • Zone 10: RAM burpees

What changes between DEKA formats is the running. DEKA FIT, the flagship, has a 500m run before each zone, so 5km in total. DEKA MILE has a 160m run before each zone, adding up to one mile. DEKA STRONG has no running at all: you do the 10 zones back to back. There are also team, Ruck (carrying a weighted pack) and Ultra (five laps of the FIT course, about 25km of running and 50 zones) options at some events. Results show 20 splits, 10 runs and 10 zones, so you can see exactly where you gained or lost time.

How does a HYROX race work?

HYROX is simple to describe: run 1km, do one workout station, and repeat eight times. That is 8km of running plus eight stations, always in this order:

  • 1,000m SkiErg
  • 50m sled push
  • 50m sled pull
  • 80m burpee broad jumps
  • 1,000m row
  • 200m farmers carry
  • 100m sandbag lunges
  • 100 wall balls

You can race solo in Open (standard weights) or Pro (heavier weights), as a pair in Doubles, where you run together and split the stations however you like, or as a team of four in the Relay. For a full breakdown of the loads, see our guide to HYROX divisions and weights.

HYROX races run over several days in big exhibition halls. In the UK this season, HYROX has listed Birmingham (NEC, 27 October to 1 November 2026) and London (ExCeL, 2 to 6 December 2026), with more UK dates added through the season.

Which race should you do?

Choose DEKA if:

  • Running is your weak spot. 500m at a time feels far less daunting than 1km, and DEKA MILE cuts each run to 160m.
  • You want a gentle first race. DEKA STRONG and DEKA MILE let you try race day without a 5km run on top.
  • You like variety. Ten different zones means you are never on one movement for long.
  • You love a clear benchmark. A fixed course and 20 splits make it easy to track progress from one race to the next.

Choose HYROX if:

  • You enjoy running. 8km of running is the backbone of the race, so runners have a head start.
  • You want more race options. HYROX holds several multi-day UK events each season, so it is easier to find a date that works.
  • You want to race with a friend. In Doubles you run together and share the station work.
  • You want a big endurance goal. Longer runs and bigger stations make it a proper test of stamina.

You do not have to choose forever. Because the movements overlap so much, one race can be a useful stepping stone to the other. If you go for HYROX first, our first HYROX race guide for beginners walks through how to get ready, and most of it applies to DEKA too.

Can you train for DEKA and HYROX at the same time?

Yes. Rowing, skiing, carries, lunges, sled work and burpees appear in both, so a lot of your training counts twice. The main differences are how far you run between stations and a handful of race-specific movements. Three or four sessions a week is plenty to start, and our hybrid training weekly schedule shows how to fit running and strength around each other.

4. HIIT (optional)Short, hard efforts on a rower, ski erg or bikeAir bike efforts and burpeesBurpee broad jumps and sled pushes if your gym has a sled

Leave a rest day between harder sessions, start with loads and distances that feel comfortable, and add a little each week. If your gym has no sled, steep hill walks, heavy farmer's carries and walking lunges are reasonable stand-ins while you build leg strength.

What should first-timers know before race day?

  • Practise running after a station. Your legs will feel heavy for the first minute or so. That is normal, and it gets easier with practice.
  • Read the movement standards. Both races set rules for each movement, so check the organiser's rulebook and train to that standard.
  • Pick a friendly division. DEKA MILE or STRONG, or HYROX Open or Doubles, are better first races than Pro or Ultra.
  • Hold back on the first run. Going out too fast is the classic mistake in both races. You should feel like you could go quicker.
  • Keep food simple. Eat a familiar meal a few hours before your start time and have water to hand.

How can Edge help you train for either race?

DEKA and HYROX both reward the same thing: being able to run, lift and keep moving when you are tired. That is exactly why Edge treats running, strength and HIIT as one plan, rather than making you juggle a running app and a gym app.

Edge Pro gives you a fully personalised plan across running, strength, HIIT and mobility, ready within 24 hours, and you can message a real coach anytime, for example to ask how to swap a sled session if your gym does not have one. Edge syncs with Strava, Garmin, Apple Health and Coros, and manual entries count too. Edge is free to download, and Edge Pro is from £19.99 a month with a 7-day free trial (a card is needed to start). Join 20,000+ members training for their next goal.
