EDGE REWARDS

The Best Apps That Reward You for Exercising (UK 2026)

The apps that actually give you something back for training, ranked by what you really get.

TL;DR

  • Most reward apps only count steps and hand back pennies, so the real question is what actually lands in your hand.
  • Step and activity apps like Sweatcoin and WeWard turn walking into points, but the value is usually a few £ a month at best.
  • Crypto move-to-earn apps such as STEPN can pay more, yet token prices swing hard and most ask for an upfront purchase.
  • Insurance-linked schemes like Vitality Active Rewards offer strong perks, but only if you hold a qualifying paid policy.
  • Edge Rewards, free and launching in October 2026, counts any logged workout rather than steps alone and pays out in real products.

Getting rewarded for exercise you already do sounds like an easy win, and a whole category of apps now promises exactly that. The catch is that reward apps vary wildly in what they count, what they hand back, and how much effort it takes to see anything real. This guide groups the main types by what you actually get, names examples only where they are well established, and stays honest about the trade-offs. Values change constantly, so treat every figure as a rough guide, accurate at the time of writing.

Why do most exercise reward apps feel underwhelming?

There are two reasons. First, most apps reward steps and nothing else, so a hard strength session, a HIIT class or a swim earns you nothing. Second, the payout is often tiny, arriving as fractions of a token, a slow trickle of points, or gift-card credit that takes months to build. There is usually a verification layer too, since apps guard against cheating by checking GPS or sensor data, which is why indoor and treadmill steps sometimes do not count. None of that makes these apps useless. As a nudge to move a little more, they can genuinely help. Just go in expecting motivation, not meaningful income.

Which apps reward you just for steps?

Step-counting apps are the largest and best-known group. Sweatcoin converts outdoor steps into its own in-app currency, earning roughly one coin per 1,000 verified outdoor steps and capping free accounts at around ten coins a day. Those coins buy offers and occasional prizes rather than cash, and the real-world value is modest. WeWard works in a similar way, paying points it calls Wards that you can later swap for gift cards, PayPal credit or charity donations, with a daily cap of around 25 Wards. CashWalk and other step trackers follow the same pattern. Because many of these apps only credit outdoor or verified steps, time on a treadmill or moving around the house may not register at all.

The honest picture is that these apps tend to pay a few £ a month at best for a typical walker, and only steps count. If your training is mostly walking and you would take those steps anyway, that is free upside. If you lift, run intervals or do classes, most of your effort goes unrewarded. It can still be worth running one or two of these apps if you are a keen walker, since the steps cost you nothing, but keep your expectations low.

What about cashback, points and council-backed apps?

A second group leans on points and partnerships rather than a standalone currency. BetterPoints, for example, has run schemes with UK local councils that reward walking, cycling and other sustainable travel, sometimes through prize draws or vouchers, as part of community health programmes. Availability depends on where you live and which schemes are active. Gift-card apps like WeWard also sit here, since the end reward is high-street or PayPal credit. The upside is that the rewards are familiar and easy to use. The catch is the same as before: values are small, and step-only tracking leaves gym and studio work out of the picture. These schemes are best seen as a civic nudge to move more, with any voucher a bonus rather than the point.

Do crypto move-to-earn apps actually pay?

Move-to-earn apps reward activity with cryptocurrency. STEPN is the best-known example: you buy an NFT trainer, then earn a token called GST by walking or running outdoors with GPS switched on. On paper the daily figures can look higher than step apps, but the reality is complicated. You pay upfront for the NFT, token prices are volatile and have swung dramatically, and the rules change often in ways that can cut what smaller earners receive. Sweatcoin also has a linked crypto token, SWEAT, whose value has been very low. The wider move-to-earn category has cooled since its early hype, so momentum and payouts can fade as fast as they arrive. Treat any crypto reward as speculative rather than a reliable return, and never spend more on entry than you are comfortable losing.

Are insurance-linked rewards worth it?

Some of the richest perks come from insurers. Vitality Active Rewards, tied to Vitality health or life cover, awards activity points for steps and workouts that can unlock rewards such as weekly coffees, cinema tickets and discounts, and its Apple Watch benefit can reduce monthly repayments when you hit activity targets. The perks are genuinely valuable, but there is a clear gate: you need a qualifying paid policy, and premiums start well above the cost of most fitness apps. It is also worth remembering that the biggest rewards usually depend on hitting consistent monthly activity targets, not a one-off effort. If you already hold the right cover, the rewards are a strong bonus. If not, buying a policy purely for the perks rarely makes sense.

What rewards you for real training, not just walking?

This is the gap Edge Rewards is built for. It is a free programme launching in October 2026, and rather than tracking steps alone it counts any logged workout, including strength, running, HIIT, mobility and manual entries, plus imports from Strava, Apple Health, Garmin and Coros. Members earn up to 50 points a day, one point per minute of a logged workout up to 50, plus 2.5 points per 1,000 steps up to 25, with a combined daily cap of 50 and a reset at the end of each month. Points are spent in an in-app marketplace on real products from partner brands, a mix of free items and discounts across categories like coffee and drinks, gels and snacks, protein, and apparel. As a rough sense of scale, about a week of training earns a free coffee. Rewards are partner-gifted, so this is about getting something back for training you already do, not a cash payout.

Edge Rewards sits inside the wider Edge app, which treats running, strength and HIIT as one hybrid plan and now supports 18,000+ members. Everyone earns and redeems for free. Edge Pro members, on the premium tier, earn faster with Double XP, have no daily cap, and get access to exclusive prizes and secret offers. Because points reset to zero at the end of each calendar month with no roll-over, the programme rewards steady, regular training rather than occasional bursts.

How do you pick the right one?

Start with what you actually do. If your movement is almost all walking, a step app is the simplest free bonus, as long as you accept the small returns. If you are comfortable with risk and the crypto world, move-to-earn can pay more but is far from guaranteed. If you already have qualifying insurance, use the rewards built into it. And if your training spans strength, running and HIIT, look for a programme that rewards all of it rather than steps alone. The best reward is one that fits the training you would do anyway, so it costs you nothing extra.
