EDGE REWARDS

Do Any Apps Reward You for Going to the Gym? (UK 2026)

The apps that turn workouts into real perks, how they work, and what to look for.

TL;DR

  • Yes, a few kinds of app reward gym sessions and workouts, though the value ranges from a genuine perk to a token gesture.
  • The main types are step and activity-reward apps, insurance and membership rewards, check-in and streak apps, and training-reward programmes.
  • Insurance-linked schemes such as Vitality really do give points for visiting a partner gym, while step apps such as Sweatcoin reward movement rather than the gym itself.
  • Watch for crypto-only payouts, having to buy in first, tiny real value, and vague or hidden partners.
  • Edge Rewards is free, launches October 2026, and rewards any logged workout, gym sessions included, with real partner-gifted products.

When Edge Rewards goes live with real, partner-gifted products

If you already go to the gym, it is fair to ask whether anything out there will actually reward you for it. The short answer is yes, a handful of apps will, but the words on the advert and the perk in your hand can be very different things. Some apps reward steps rather than gym sessions, some hand out a token whose value moves with a market, and a few give you a real product for training. This guide explains the main types in plain terms, how each one generally works, how to spot a fair scheme from a gimmick, and where our own programme, Edge Rewards, honestly fits.

Do any apps actually reward you for going to the gym?

Yes, a few do, but it helps to be precise about what "the gym" means here. Most reward apps pay you for movement in general, usually outdoor steps, so a treadmill session or a weights workout may not register at all. A smaller group rewards a gym visit specifically, normally by checking you in when you arrive. And a third group rewards any logged workout, so a gym session counts the same as a run or a home session. So the honest picture has layers: plenty of apps reward activity, fewer reward the gym on its own, and the one that matters most is whether what you get back is fair for the effort.

It is worth separating two things before you sign up. The first is whether an app rewards you at all, which most genuinely do. The second is whether that reward is meaningful, which is where a lot of schemes quietly fall short. Reviews of the biggest step apps often describe walking for months only to find the balance buys very little, because each unit of the in-app currency is worth a tiny fraction of a penny. Keep that gap between the promise and the payout in mind as you read on.

The main types of app that reward workouts and gym visits

Once you look past the marketing, the apps sort themselves into a few clear types. Knowing which type you are dealing with tells you almost everything about how good the reward is likely to be.

  • Step and activity-reward apps. Apps such as Sweatcoin count your steps and pay an in-app currency you spend on marketplace offers, gear and partner discounts. The catch is that free plans have a low daily cap and the currency is worth very little, and they track steps rather than gym sessions, so lifting weights may not count.
  • Crypto move-to-earn apps. Apps such as STEPN reward movement with a crypto token, but usually ask you to buy a digital item, an NFT trainer, before you can earn. What your balance is worth then swings with a live market, and can fall close to nothing.
  • Insurance and membership rewards. Health schemes such as Vitality give you activity points for each visit to a partner gym, which you swap each week for rewards like a coffee or a cinema ticket, plus a discount on membership. This is the clearest example of an app rewarding the gym itself, though it only pays off if you already hold the plan.
  • Check-in and streak apps. Many gym apps let you check in with a QR code and build a visit streak, and some brand apps hand out points or XP toward loyalty tiers when you work out. The reward here is mostly motivation, badges and the odd own-brand discount, rather than a product you can hold.
  • Training-reward programmes. Newer programmes, where Edge Rewards sits, reward any logged workout, gym sessions included, with real partner-gifted products rather than a token or a promise of cash.

The table below sums up how each type tends to work. It compares categories rather than ranking specific brands, because features and prices change often.

How to tell a real reward from a gimmick

You do not need to be an expert to sort the fair schemes from the ones to avoid. A few warning signs turn up again and again.

  • You can only cash out into a crypto token that you then have to hold or trade yourself.
  • You are asked to buy something first, such as an NFT item, or to pay a fee before you can withdraw anything.
  • The rewards need unrealistic totals, so months of activity add up to a few pence.
  • The app is vague about who its partners are, or the real product being sold is your data.
  • The marketing leads with big cash promises rather than clear, everyday rewards.

The good signs are just as easy to spot. A fair programme tends to be free to join and free to earn, with nothing to buy first. It is clear about how you earn and exactly what you get. The rewards are real products or come from brands you recognise. Any workout counts, not only outdoor steps, so gym sessions, runs, lifting and HIIT are all included. It respects your data and tells you plainly how it is used. And there are sensible daily limits that stop cheating without punishing honest training.

So where does Edge Rewards fit?

We built Edge Rewards to be the straightforward kind. It is a free programme launching in October 2026, and it is open to every Edge member, not just paying ones. You earn up to 50 points a day: 1 point for every minute of any logged workout, up to 50, plus 2.5 points for every 1,000 steps, up to 25, with a combined daily cap of 50 points. Any logged workout counts, so a gym session earns just like a run, including manual entries and sessions imported from Strava, Apple Health, Garmin and Coros. Points reset to zero at the end of each calendar month, and they do not roll over.

You spend those points in an in-app marketplace on real products from partner brands, a mix of free items and discounts, across categories like coffee and drinks, gels, snacks and bars, protein and supplements, and apparel and gear. The rewards are partner-gifted, so there is no token to trade and nothing volatile to track. As a rough guide, about a week of training earns you a free coffee. Everyone earns and redeems, while Edge Pro members earn faster with Double XP, have no daily cap, and unlock exclusive prizes and secret offers.

Edge Rewards sits on top of the wider Edge app, which treats your running, strength and HIIT as one connected plan rather than separate silos. The core app is free, and Edge Pro starts at £19.99 a month with a free 7-day trial, giving you a fully personalised plan ready in 15 minutes and a real coach to message anytime. Around 18,000+ members already train with Edge, and every one of them will be able to earn from the day Edge Rewards goes live.
