What to Wear Running for Beginners

Walk into any running shop and the wall of kit is overwhelming. Compression sleeves, base layers, hydration vests, technical socks at £20 a pair. For a complete beginner, the message seems to be that you need a wardrobe of specialised clothing before you can take your first stride. The truth is the opposite. You can run consistently in basic, comfortable kit for months before any of that matters.

This guide is the complete framework. The 4 essentials that genuinely matter from day one, what is nice to have once you are a few months in, what to wear in each season and weather condition, what to never wear running, and how to build a simple beginner running wardrobe for under £100.

FUNDAMENTAL / RUNNING KIT

Beginner running kit, in numbers

4
essentials from day one. Everything else is optional.
£100
covers a complete beginner wardrobe outside of shoes.
10°C
is the dress rule. Dress as if it is 10 degrees warmer than it is.
The honest truth: Cotton is the enemy. Everything else is preference. Once you have decent shoes, technical socks, anti chafe shorts or leggings, and a sports bra if needed, you are kitted out. Everything else is a nice to have.

THE ESSENTIALS / DAY ONE

The 4 essentials from day one

ESSENTIAL 1
Running shoes
A proper cushioned daily trainer. Will last 500 to 800 km.
ESSENTIAL 2
Technical socks
Synthetic or merino, not cotton. Prevents blisters. £8 to £15 per pair.
ESSENTIAL 3
Anti chafe shorts or leggings
Tight or loose fit, both fine. Just not cotton joggers.
ESSENTIAL 4
Sports bra (if needed)
High impact rating. Replaces every 6 to 12 months. The single most important piece of kit for women.

BY SEASON / WHAT TO WEAR

What to wear by temperature

25°C+
Hot summer dayVest or light short sleeve, short shorts, cap or visor, sunglasses, sun cream.
15-25°C
Warm conditionsShort sleeve top, shorts or capri leggings. Light cap optional.
5-15°C
UK spring or autumnLong sleeve or light long sleeve over short sleeve. Leggings or shorts plus knee warmers.
0-5°C
UK winterLong sleeve base, mid layer or wind shell, leggings, gloves, headband, buff for neck.
UNDER 0°C
Frosty morningsThermal base layer, mid layer, wind jacket, thick leggings, gloves, hat, buff. Cover skin.
The 10 degree rule: Dress as if it is 10 degrees warmer than it is. The first 5 minutes you should feel slightly cold. After that you will be perfectly warm. Overdressing is the most common winter mistake.

BY WEATHER / SPECIFIC CONDITIONS

What to wear by weather condition

RAIN
Wet conditions
Light water resistant jacket, cap to keep rain off face. Embrace getting damp.
WIND
Windy days

HUMID
Humid heat
Vests, mesh fabric, light coloured clothing. Hydrate before, during and after.
