BEGINNER MISTAKES / 03
Stop comparing yourself to everyone else in the gym
The people you see lifting heavy and sprinting on the treadmill have been at it for years. You walked in two weeks ago. Of course it looks different.
It happens to everyone. You walk into a class. There is the person in the corner doing pull ups like they were born doing them. There is someone sprinting at a pace you could not hold for ten seconds. And suddenly you feel small. Out of place. Embarrassed about the weight you are about to pick up.
This feeling is the single biggest reason people stop coming back.
You are seeing someone else's middle, not their start
Every fit person you see was once where you are now. The person crushing burpees has probably been training for three, five, ten years. They were once the person who could not do a single push up. They just kept turning up.
Your only fair comparison is to yourself last week. That is the only metric that matters, and it is the only one you actually have control over.

Nobody is actually watching you
This is the kind thing nobody tells you. The person next to you is not looking at your form, your weight, or your technique. They are thinking about their own session, their own breath, their own playlist. The spotlight you feel on you is almost entirely imagined.
Once that lands, the gym becomes a much less scary place. You can wear what you want, lift what feels right, and rest when you need to. You are not on display.
Track your own wins, not theirs
The fastest way to break comparison is to start tracking the things only you can measure. How does today feel compared to last week? Did you finish the session you planned? Did you walk in and walk out, even though it was hard?
This is exactly why we built Edge to celebrate your wins, not someone else's. The app shows you your own consistency, your own progress, the small steps that build into real change. You compete with yesterday, not with anyone else.
If the gym still feels too much, train at home
There is no rule that says you have to start in a busy gym. Your living room is a brilliant place to build the first 12 weeks of fitness. Bodyweight strength, follow along sessions, walks, and short runs are all you need. Once you feel solid, the gym will feel a lot less intimidating because you are no longer the absolute beginner.
Progress you can feel beats progress that looks impressive on Instagram. Always.
Train your way, on your terms
Edge gives you a plan you can do at home, in the gym, or in the park. No pressure, no comparison, just you getting better.
